OVERVIEW OF CLASSES |
| BLACKSMITHING: My current
rate for classes is
$150 per day. Class days start at 9:00 AM and end at
5:00 PM - a 1-hour break for lunch at noon (not provided), and all the
cold well water you care to drink. I offer two different blacksmithing
classes: a 1-day class and a 3-day class. In the 1-day class the student
will forge a rose or a fireplace poker (depending on the student's
previous blacksmithing experience... the more experienced student makes
a rose). In the 3-day class the student makes a complete fireplace tool
set and stand - a stand with a sculpted longhorn steer head, a poker,
and a shovel (they hang on the steer's horns). You can see a similar set
on my web site on the FIREPLACE TOOLS page. Click on the picture of the
fireplace tool set. When the page loads, scroll down to find the
longhorn steer set.
BLADESMITHING: My current rate for classes is $180 per day, following the same time schedule as the blacksmithing classes described above. The class lasts a minimum of two days - longer if you have a complex blade design you want to tackle. Day one is devoted to forging the blade. Day two is devoted to mounting the blade in a handle. I recommend a simple "Hunter" blade configuration to start with, but if you have a custom design you want to make, call me. We'll agree on a class duration for the project before you make any commitments. I have no set time frame for my classes - I only reserve time for attending events... the rest of my time is available unless something unexpected crops up. You do not need any tools of your own since I supply everything but your clothing. You DO need to wear sturdy shoes (leather work boots are best - avoid nylon footwear like NIKE, etc) and a shirt made of 100% cotton. Forge sparks, tiny as they are, make huge, nasty, melty holes in most man-made/synthetic materials... so don't wear anything but cotton - heavy denim jeans or coveralls and cotton chambray shirts are ideal. My shop is located on my personal 10-acres of Ozark Mountain forest, shaded by cedars and oaks. It makes for WONDERFUL photos, so when you come for a visit or for classes be sure to bring your camera. If you opt for a multi-day class there is a small motel about 2.5 miles down the road - inexpensive at $29-ish per night. Forsyth is a small town, but there is a restaurant and a couple of fast food places, and the motel room includes a small kitchenette if you'd rather cook your own. It's a scenic Ozark mountain retreat dream come true! I do not presently have any event commitments which would interfere with a choice in class dates. Weekends are not (NOT!) a problem. If you're interested in blacksmithing or bladesmithing - getting a hammer in your hand and shaping some hot steel - let me hear from you. ~ Steve "Tiny" Robinson |
